Description

Biography of Shelley by John Addington Symonds, 1897English Men of Letters series edited by John Morley Harper & Brothers, Franklin Square, New York 1879 When literary queers collide: First US edition of John Addington Symondss biography of Percy Bysshe Shelley. Symonds was an English poet, literary critic, & cultural historian. Although married with children, his bisexuality was an open secret & he wrote treatises on the subject of Greek love. The book is bound in plain brown cloth covers with red

and the cards always feature my favorite memorial motifs: Weeping willows

but it may be possible to remove the box from the main frame & have glass cut for it

though the pamphlet has some damage

I also recommend storing it neatly folded rather than on a hanger: Hanging can put stress on the silk

Refer to photos for size & condition: Excellent with some wear to the velvet typical of age

The ornaments inside are all wooden

Cloistered nuns and monks made these to support themselves or charities

There is also some writing on one page

Green paper interior

Outstanding condition: Apart from some wear and drying to the leather

Antique mourning card for a man who died in 1920

pink velvet ribbon
